1. What is the idea?

Basically, the main idea is to sell words and write the largest authored story in history……… simple. People buy words which I will host on my website. The words written by any given purchaser will be easy to differentiate by color blocks, and can also provide a direct link that author’s website of choice. The words will also contribute to a constantly evolving story, not to mention a one-off fingerprint of color signifying the way this story has evolved. This will most likely become the largest authored story in history, and anyone can participate and influence the storyline.

As well as providing “word-buyers” a form of advertising and a chance to help mold these historic novels, there is also a potential investment on offer. It is feasible that the 2 stories to come out of this website will be published on paper and sold as books. In this event, each person who has contributed to the story will receive royalties from the book sales. This royalty will be directly proportional to the “word-buyers” contribution to the total story (e.g. if somebody buys half the words to the million word story, and it makes $2 million in book sales, they get half of that in royalties).

There are 2 stories which I am selling words to. One story has 1 million words in it, with each word costing $1. The other story has 1 million characters in it, each character costs $1. The site offers “word-buyers” a totally unique way to advertise, as well as being a fairly creative exercise.

Creative freedom is definitely encouraged, and there is almost total freedom of expression. This includes allowing totally gratuitous acts of publicity such as the following passage. This passage shows 2 previous entries by “word-buyers” followed by the gratuitous one. However, there are a few rules and even gratuitous publicity presented in the stories needs to flow to fit into the story.

The ability of being able to advertise in such a way is one option to consider for “word buyers”, and will not be stopped. It is a total idiosyncrasy of the concept of this website. However, the more savvy author may use their words for more creative and striking effect. It must be remembered that this is an ongoing piece that people will READ, so it is potentially better to write interestingly. Please read the IMPORTANT NOTE below...it will help you get more clicks on your link

There are certain things which will not be allowed on this site:

1. Words must be the complete, non-abbreviated form unless appropriate in the context of the sentence (e.g. “w8 until L8r”, is not acceptable for “wait until later”).

2. Words must flow to make a sentence (e.g. you cannot just write “Gaming, Gaming, Gaming” unless it somehow fits into a sentence),

3. Sentences must flow from previous sentences, enough to allow the story to make sense when reading it (especially if there is a gratuitous direct reference to yourself),

4. Non appropriate use of vulgar language will not be allowed. Obviously there are times when this language is warranted (it is a story after all), however just writing “F_ _K, F_ _K, F_ _K, F_ _K” to get attention will not be allowed.

5. You cannot put your website address (or any website address) within the words you contribute to the story. I do not want these stories to become a diary of website addresses……..you do not need to write your web address in the story anyway as there will already be a direct link to your website!

Apart from those simple rules, the writing is up to the buyer of the words, allowing the formula of this concept to play itself out. If these rules are breached and are not rectified within 12 hours, the words will not be published on my site, that person will be placed at the end of the queue, and the next person in the “word-buyer” queue will be contacted

***VERY IMPORTANT...PLEASE READ*** This is my philosophy on how to make best use of your contribution. If you choose to blatantly advertise yourself in your words I think you are making a big mistake!!!. By doing this people will probably know before they click your link whether or not they actually want to follow it. Once this thing gets going, there will be many links…...and if you have written “look at the best gaming site”, or “eat more health food” most people will choose not to hit your link. I think if you want a lot of people to hit your link it is probably best to not give away too much about your site in what you write…...it is not needed as everything is already on your website, and that is where you really want people to go.

I really think the best idea is to try to get people interested in what has been written. I would personally do this by just trying to contribute to making the story more interesting: either writing very well (something that actually fits really well into the story), being amusing, being creative, being funny…...basically, if you write something that is clever and interesting, that is what will make people want to follow your link to see where it came from!

2. Who am I?

My name is Aditya Kesarcodi-Watson. I am a 29 year old Australian male currently living in New Zealand. I am a scientist by trade and am currently completing my PhD. After originally completing my Bachelor of Science (Aquaculture) in Australia in 1998, I quickly avoided anything to do with science and decided to travel. I then spent the next 4 years with stints in Asia, doing the great Ozzie past-time of returning behind bars in the UK, and working on ski fields in New Zealand and France.

As things turned out, whilst working a season atop The Remarkables ski field in New Zealand, I saw an advertisement for my current research project on the internet. Being in the same country, and considering a change of direction into something a little more solid than seasonal cooking and cleaning, I traveled to the interview once the ski season finished. The rest is history, and here I am now indeed into something more solid, if not stationary.

I am currently mid way through my PhD and am researching probiotic (good) bacteria as alternatives to antibiotic use in mussel production. Sounds interesting eh? Well it’s not too bad, and involves a lot of bacterial work, sleep deprivation as well as intermittent periods of heavy brain usage.

3. Where did the idea come from?

In January this year (2006) I saw a story on the news about a website created by an Englishman called Alex Tew. His site, TheMillionDollarHomepage.com, sold 1 million pixels from his website for $1 each. It was a great form of advertising for the pixel buyers as the site got huge worldwide interest and millions of visitors, whilst it was a money making venture for Alex. Alex ended up selling all his pixels and making $1 million in under 6 months……not a bad idea eh?

Well, when I saw this it made me totally re-think about what the internet was. I realized for the first time that the internet is a huge financial machine. Obviously, great and original concepts like Alex’s can potentially make money, but everyday there are massive amounts of money up for grabs on the internet for advertisers, companies and consumers alike. I guess this is a fairly simple concept for some people, but I also think that there are many people that don’t think about it at all (myself included). So with this reappraisal of the internet, I brainstormed for a way to get amongst it! I wanted something catchy, original and also something that offered a little more creativity for the participants than pixels. I came up with a range of ideas. Some are in the back of my mind currently, whilst others probably aren’t actually that great…..but that’s what brainstorming is right! I think this website is the best concept I came up with in terms of creativity.

When I first thought of this website in January I was like “I’ve got to do this ASAP. This concept is so simple, so easy to think up, that someone is going to do this any day soon if I don’t do it quickly”. I was hot on it for a week or so, but……………..as things go, I got sidetracked. I got totally tied up with writing a literature review for my PhD and also lab experiments. It is now 5 months on, and I’m finally getting back to it! Anyway, I really can’t believe that a search on the web for similar sites came up with nothing! All I can say is “great”……..I mean GREAT!!! It’s still an original concept.

4. Can I write whatever I want?

...But there was something wrong, something dark about the way in which the pigeon circled the letterbox. It was almost as if there was some outside force penetrating the avian mind.

Almost as if

It would be safe to assume that this sort of

thing was unusual, as historically pigeons displayed fairly passive behaviour towards metal objects housing

correspondence.

Without hesitation, the bird swooped and grasped the contents of the letterbox in it’s beak,

leaving behind only one flyer headed…… “if you look at my website you’ll find the best online gaming site”….

5. What do I get out of it?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Firstly, you get a form of advertising. Each contribution by a given person will be directly linked to the person’s own website if desired. In this way, there are probably 2 ways to stand out from the crowd:

1. buy more words thereby having a more recognizable section in the story,

2. write creatively, wittingly, humorously; something which will want the reader to see where it came from.

Secondly, you get to take part in this historic website, the first site to sell words! Who knows, the site may well become an icon of the web, another original idea that grabbed the internet. Even if you do not wish to buy words for advertising, you might like to write words to be part of this site. All contributor’s names will also be listed, even if not linking to a website.

Thirdly, you can potentially gain profit from the stories being published as books. This is not guaranteed, however things going well and the books getting published, people who have written words in each story will also hold a proportional stake in future royalties. I reckon this is a fairly interesting aspect. If these stories get completed, I will do everything in my power to get them published…..when I get on a project I always see it through to the end.

6. Do I need to have my own website to buy words?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

No. Anyone can buy words and become a part of this website. Obviously having a website allows those people a new avenue for advertising. However, you might just like to become a part of this, as well as gaining a share of potential royalties generated from future publishing of the stories. If you do not have your own website to link to, you might like to link to a website that interests you...maybe a specific cause. There has already been a link made to a Panda rescue organization and I think that’s a great cause. There is also a link to the FBI’s most wanted list (and I’m sure it didn’t come from the FBI!). So think what you want to promote, and you can link to that.

19. I'd like to contribute but I'm not very good at English or grammar

So Jeffery stopped thinking about the shopping vouchers and got back to the matter at hand.

you are a gust of wind” he said to himself.

As it turned out there was nothing that could be done now. If only they had remembered to fasten the last Velcro

7. Why do you have 2 different stories to buy words for? Which one should I choose to buy words in?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Initially the idea was to create just one story with 1 million words in it. However, I then realized that this story would be quite long. I then thought of the idea to have 1 million characters in the story, however this meant that contributors would have to pay more for each word/sentence/contribution. I decided to start 2 stories and offer the choice to people wanting to buy words/characters.

8. How long will I have to write and submit the words I want to buy?
